why I've been sleep-deprived for weeks 我幾個禮拜失眠的原因

I've actually been so exhausted and so sleep-deprived on the brink of lunacy that I was planning to put off starting this blog till about 2 months later. I got thinking though, that I still want to journal the experience while everything is still fresh. It'd be a shame to have nothing to look back on a few years later except a few food-stained t-shirts and kitten scratch scars. So about 3 weeks ago, I hear news from our organization Animals Taiwan, that someone found 3 baby kittens about 2-weeks old abandoned in a box on the street corner. For anyone who's ever taken care of baby kittens, let me tell you it's NOT easy. It's like having 3 crying infants at home. So I completely understood how the discoverer was unable to care for them herself. Thus begins the story of how I became a kitten mommy... So, at the estimated age of 2 weeks, I was bottle-feeding the babies kitten milk formula with a baby animal bottle every 3 hours around the clock. At every feeding, the babies drink with such panicked urgency that it makes me nervous, feeling solely responsible for such a tiny helpless creature’s life. It’s a lot to swallow in an emergency overnight decision that I made so quickly. Someone needed to take care of them. No one else could; I’d figure out a way to make it work. After their bellies are full, they need to be burped, gently, just like a baby. Since newborn/baby kittens are unable to go to the bathroom by themselves, you have to do what the mommy cat does. Well, not exactly…the mother cat will use her tongue to lick the nether regions (yep, ALL of em) to stimulate the elimination process. Wow, a mother’s love is like no other. I accomplished the same with a gently moist baby wipe. After feeding and “diapering” each kitten, I use baby wipe to clean each kitten with short strokes to make it feel like the mother is cleaning it. This is important to their hygiene, socialization, and well-being. The best part of each feeding is that they fall asleep right away, and that’s when they are at their cutest haha. I actually carried them around in a baby sling with a hot-water bottle to warm them after their feedings. This is because I found they slept better when I held them, maybe it had to do with hearing my heartbeat like their mom’s? So, carrying them around in a big sack hanging around my chest and tummy, it was pointed out by a friend that I really do look like a pregnant lady/mother, bc the way I started waddling (it’s tough on the lower back to hold that weight in the front), the way I had to awkwardly ease into my seat (for fear of waking them), or the way I began leaving the house with total disregard for my appearance (pajama pants, sweats, baggy food-stained t-shirts, no makeup, unbrushed hair, the works…) After each feeding, especially the ones from 2am till 8am, I tried to sleep, but having sleeping problems to begin with, by the time I finally fell asleep again, I had to drag my butt out of bed for the next feeding. After doing this for a few days, I was already starting to go crazy. I would fall asleep in my chair with 3 kittens on my chest and a bottle sticking out of each pocket, and have nightmares of kittens dying from bad foster care (paranoia). When I would manage to leave the house to run errands, I would take them with me in a carrier warmed by hot water bottles, and have a fully stocked diaper and bottle bag. Even when taking a bath, I would panic and run out to check on them, swearing that I had heard them start crying. This is why mothers go insane…and these are just cats! Everyone, please go call your mom and tell her you love her, and if you were lucky enough to have a responsible and caring father that shared the burden of childrearing, call him too… Even though everyone was telling me I looked gaunt and pale, and I always smelled of cat milk, and was covered in scratches and hearing cat cries in my head, when I looked at those sweet sleeping babies smelling of sweet milk curled together on my tummy with paws clutching me, I know everything is worth those few minutes. 最近已經快累到瘋，所以我本來在想我會等幾個月之後才開始寫這些日記文章，但我就開始覺得還是把握這個經驗，不要等到都忘了才開始記錄這些。 3個禮拜之前，有人在路口撿到了三支小幼貓被棄養丟在紙箱里。還好沒有狗狗先抓到！這樣的幼貓（差不多兩個禮拜大）超難照顧，而且就算你全力去做不一定會ok。養baby動物真的不簡單，很像有三個小baby在家里不停的在哭。所以我完全了解為什么撿到的人沒辦法自己照顧。他的最大的問題是上班時間。所以我就是這樣的開始變成幼貓媽媽。。。 那時候兩個禮拜大，所以每三個小時要用奶瓶幫他們喂奶（幼貓奶粉泡的）。看他們那么的急吸奶瓶，我就自己有點被嚇到。因為我發覺這三支小單純baby整個生命在我身上。因為我很快決定照顧他們，我那時候還在消化。。。我當時只是個很自然的反應，我覺得是我的緣分，很像我那時候開始養latte 跟turtle的決定。我只是知道他們需要被救，別人沒辦法，所以我不管怎么樣會想辦法全力的把他們養好。吃碗奶之後，肚子圓圓的，接下來要幫一個一個打嗝，不然他們會不舒服會臟氣。因為幼貓還沒辦法自己上廁所，你要幫他們用。通常媽媽貓會用嘴巴去舔那邊下面，刺激他們尿尿便便。我用了一個溫和的baby濕紙巾做了一樣的效果。吃完了上完廁所之後，我用濕紙巾一點一點搽干凈。這個是要模仿媽媽清他們的毛。這是為了他們的健康，也會有心理影響，因為他們會知道有媽媽愛他們在照顧他們。這時候我背他們在各baby前面背包裝暖暖包掛在我胸口肚子前。這樣他們吃飽了，野狗暖，也感覺就可以在媽媽肚子胸口立刻睡著。他們這時候是最可愛的時候因為沒在哭叫哈哈。我那段時間朋友都說我整個感覺從各方面突然變了媽媽，包括我走路的笨重的腳步（因為重量背在前面久了就腰好痛，手需要扶著腰），我外表（隨便穿個睡衣褲子或運動褲，被食物弄髒的t-shirt，素顏沒梳頭發 的出門）。真的當媽媽我發現我應該都不會在乎形象了哈哈。每次喂完之後，想睡但因為壓力太大睡眠問題睡不著，終于差點要睡著時，鬧鐘響了，該再喂寶寶了。 這樣三天已經快瘋了。我那時候會坐在椅子半睡，胸上有三支小貓咪，個口袋有奶瓶，一邊抱著他們一邊在做惡夢，都夢到我沒照顧好，然後因為我不夠好他們沒活下去。終于能出門辦事或上通告，我會帶著他們在他們小籃子包的暖暖包，另外便背著奶瓶，奶粉，濕紙巾，寵物尿布。。。我唯一的離開他們是洗澡時，可是好幾次以為我聽到貓咪哭聲，全身還有泡泡沖出去看他們是不是發生了什么事。大家說有點過度的緊張擔心他們，可是我一直會想，以防萬一，因為是三個小生命不要冒險。我現在知道為什么媽媽剛生得時候都快要瘋掉，而且我照顧的還是只是幼貓。。。鼓勵大家現在立刻去撥個電話給媽媽跟她說個“我愛你”。。。如果爸爸是很貼心的一起負擔養小孩的每天辛苦，也跟他說一聲吧哈哈 雖然我這陣子有人說感覺臉色不太好，太白又開始，全身有奇奇怪怪的被抓到的疤，可是我那幾分鐘我可以往下看到三個小寶寶一起睡在我肚子上，手抓著我的身體不放，我就心里知道一切都值得。
